After you taper off prednisone when do your corisol and energy levels return to normal? Is it after the taper is complete or a few weeks after the taper? I'v been on it since March at 20 mg a day.

Chronic Hiver replied: "Once you get down to around 5mg a day, your adrenal glands should start 'waking up' and begin functioning again, producing cortisol. How quickly you get back to feeling like yourself is dependent on how long you were on it and at what dose(s). I've been on pred many times, and find it can take a good couple of months to get feeling right again; but then again I'm usually on much higher dosing (min. of 40mg/day) for a year or more at a time. Many people find that switching to every-other-day dosing once they get down around 10mg/day or so, helps lessen the misery of withdrawal. But of course consult with your doctor before trying that."

Linda replied: "20mg a day is quite a lot. Are you asthmatic? Prednisone is very draining on the system and I find it can mask over other problems -- but if you need it -- you need it. You will feel your energy levels return about 2 weeks after finishing the drug but your body will stay bloated for may be 6 weeks (sorry)."

How can I taper off Prednisone and Clonazepam? I'm tapering off Prednisone and Clonazepam at the same time and I'm having a lot of trouble. I take Prednisone for my Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis and Clonazepam for anxiety. I've tapered down the Prednisone from 10mg a day to 5mg a day and am currently taking 0.5mg of Clonazepam once a day. I've been on both medications for around 3 months and have found that any time I try to taper down the Clonazepam, I get really bad withdrawal symptoms (depression, anxiety, pounding heartbeat). Any advice?

The doc. replied: "NEVER EVER stop an anxiety drug without a doctor's advice. Eosinophils do continue to produce in body-30% of leukocytes are that, so you shouldn't have too much trrouble. Keep cutting it slowly though. Clonazepam is a drug that sometimes you need but don't realize. If you suffer severe anxiety do not get off unless your doctor advises you too."

babysasa replied: "I had anxiety disorder. I was taken zolouf and few other pills but they didn't work for me. The medicines made me wanna cry and scream and i was very very depress. I spoke with my doctor and she gave me low amount of clonazepam. She told me to take only if i feel the panic... She gave me 10 pills 4 months ago. I only took like 2 pills. Medicine helps you temperaly but only you can help yourself. try to take valerian root. this is a good suppliment. Valerian is an herb that people have used for centuries for anxiety and as a sleep aid. It is also used to ease menstrual and stomach cramps.1 It comes from the root of the valerian plant. I took it for 2 months and it works for me on taper off the medicines for anxiety. Ask your doctor and see if this is good for you. Try to keep your self busy to avoid anxiety. You have to tell your self your imagination is playing with you. You will not die from anxiety. When ever you feel it's coming. try to think of something else.My doctor told me to carry a stop sign in my heart. when ever i feel that i think too much. put a stop sign on my self. think of what ever it makes you happy. family. lover. friends. your pet. I am currently on prednisone and 7 other types of medicine for my kidney problem and anxiety. You are doing good job. You are tapering off prednisone. We are consider lucky, think of those people borned disable, ppl who lost their family in war, the 70000 ppl died in sze chun earthquake mid may 2008. We still have the chance to fight for our life. All i want to say is be strong. don't give up."

Prednisone: Is it always necessary to taper off? I've been prescribed 50 mg of Prednisone, to be taken once per day over 5 days. However, I've read a lot of scary things about withdrawal and the dangers of stopping Prednisone "cold turkey." But my doctor did not mention anything about my having to taper off. Is this because I'll only be taking it for 5 days? Is it dangerous to just stop taking it after a 5 day course?

rufusuloser replied: "Tapering off is mostly for people who have been on meds for long periods of time. 5 days would probable not require the need to taper off. Talk to your doctor or phamacist."

sparkeybird@ymail.com replied: "I have been on Prednisone many times. Tapering off is really for when you are on a much higher dose for a much longer time.. Usually it works in a pack like that, you'll take 3 pills 2 times a day for 3 days, then 2 pills 2 times a day for 3 days, then 1 pill 2 times a day for 3 days, then 1 pill once a day for 3 days.. I'm assuming, since you're only on it for such a short amount of time, and for a lower does, that it's only one pill. You will be ok, no worries. Hope you're feeling better. Take care"

LadyLynn replied: "To be sure, call a pharmacist. :)"

Does tapering off prednisone cause loss of appetite? Took 40mg for a week, 30mg for 2, now a week into 20mg, anyway i normally am always hungry, but now i am never hungry and have to force myself to eat.

lemondrop replied: "Well it might...it is a steroid which can cause you to gain weight and increased appetite...so maybe since your getting off, you might have loss of appetite. I really don't know for sure, but that makes sense to me."

Muscle spasms under ribs while tapering off prednisone? I am in the process of tapering my prednisone dosage down to get off of it. I was up to 40 mg per day and now I'm at 30 mg per day getting ready to go to 25 mg per day. The problem is that I am having SEVERE muscle spasms under my rib cage, both sides, and they are excruciating in nature. I can't move and barely breathe when these are happening. Is this normal when coming off prednisone? I have had broken ribs on both sides in the past. Could this maybe be the cause of these spasms in addition to the withdrawal of prednisone? Please help...I'm very concerned. Thank you!

redrock replied: "Normal ! This is normal when tapering off of this steroid. The problem is, you need to go back up an increment so that the muscle spasms stop. I would contact your dr and tell him that you're going through Prednisone Withdrawl Symptoms. He will or at least SHOULD, up your dosage just a very small bit, so that the spasms go away. Then you need to taper off SLOWER than before or you will end up with spasms in other parts of your body. I had this trouble years ago, and the muscle spasms were so bad that I needed help from my mom to be able to sit on the toilette. Horrible experience. Also, try drinking anything with calcium in it and also eat bannanas."

How sick can you become off of the drug prednisone while tapering off of it? I'm really afraid!? I've been on prednisone for several months now at about 40-55 mg per day. I am now tapering off but I am having the worst side effects and wonder if they are normal. I'm very frightened and wonder if I could possibly die from it? Please answer with serious answers as I am in need of good medical advice from ppl who have had similar experience with this drug. My dr's don't seem to want to answer my questions straight regarding these side effects. HELP! Thanks so much!

netti replied: "when I tappered off of my pred. (January will be 1 year off thank good) I got slight headaches and muscle and joint aches the tappering process has to be real slow the first time you have to be tappered off is the most difficult. (this would be my fourth time and im still here) like i said the process as to real real slow and should not have any problems good luck and take it easy you will be ok"

c0mplicated_s0ul replied: "the side effects happen while n it not while coming off it. You have to ween yourself off because you system is use to the drug and needs to get use to lower doses then no doses."

Lorenzo Steed replied: "Short answer is yes, you can get very ill if you taper off prednisone too quickly. At the dose you have been on, you should taper about 5 mg/ week. And if symptoms occur, increase back up previous level for another week. May even need to alternate dose by days, to make more gradual."

cdc7678 replied: "i have lupus and i have been on prednisone for almost 7 yrs. when i started they had me on 80 mg of prednisone. i was on that mg for almost 2 yrs. i had gained weight and also another side effect is you can get cataracts on your eyes. i found out to late i had to had surgery in my eyes. well i got completely of it. just like that and was OK for awhile until my kidneys failed on me so now I'm back on it. well anyways it is a drug w/many side effects. so i did slowly weened of it but lower doses like every week take 5 mg of Ur doses until u completely of it. i did until i stayed on 5 mg that what I'm taking now"

mr.answerman replied: "I don't know the answer to your tapering question but I can offer some information regarding oral pred. Being on oral pred will steal calcium from your bones like nobodys business. If you are on it make sure you are taking calcium and vit. D daily. I used to give presentations at assisted living homes and many people there were in wheel chairs due to oral Pred. it causes osteoporosis."

How long does prednisone stay in your system after you taper off? My son was on 50 mg for 2 weeks, 40 mg for 3 wks, now 30 mg for 2 weeks. Supposed to be tapering. Needs to take a test that requires drug/steroid screening and need to know how long it will be in his system?

kristy h replied: "Ask a pharmacist. As long as your son lets the person know that is giving him the drug test that he has taken this medication, he will be ok. They can make a note of it and it wont be held against him."

Prednisone - dosage and tapering off? I was just put on prednisone for bronchitis. 40 mg per day for 5 days. Is this a typical dosage? And will there be any side effects if I just stop taking the pills after day 5? Should I taper off of them?

kevin v replied: "Check with the pharmacist. They usually know more than your doctor. Then double-check with the doctor. Usually, it is better to taper off than to stop abruptly."

bluesaphire1996 replied: "Yes it's a normal dose. Do NOT taper them off!!! Take it exactly as your Dr. prescribed. The only side effects you might have is while your take the pills - you'll be really hungry."

casdave2001 replied: "yes that is a normal dose and you should ALWAYS wean off prednisone. That is a relatively small dose and weaning won't take but a couple of days but do it anyway. Check with your pharmacist for his/her advice."

Helios replied: "I bet you'll be fine when you quit taking them. People who take much more or for a lot longer sometimes will need to taper off. But if you'd like to taper off, save the last day's pill and cut it in half and use it over two days. Good luck with that - there's one old drug which is hugely effective. You don't want to take it forever, but it just kicks that bronchitis right in the butt."

can anyone discuss the side effects of prednisone? I'm on prednisone 20 mg twice a day for three weeks now, after three days of iv solumedrol for optic neuritis. I have experienced a lot of sweating, and I seem to have a short temper, I'm impatient. Also I sleep very little, maybe only two hours at a time then I'm awake for a few hours. I won't be tapering off of prednisone either, they will just discontinue it, what can I expect from that?

P dizzle replied: "its a steroid so if they just immediatly take you off of it you may withdraw, meaning getting sick, tired,or moody"

Dreamy S replied: "You will have nighmares and the sleeping problem will stay for a few weeks but if you get simply sleep over the counter it will help. The weight gain will go away within a couple of weeks of stopping the medication. The anger will go away in the same amount of time. But you will need to watch the following "hair loss" & "joint pain". Good luck I am still having problems and I have been off the medication for years but I was on it for 6 months and 100 mg's a day."

LILSAN34 replied: "predisone is a horrible pill with lots of setbacks weightgain is the biggest most horrible side effect .moodiness is not a permanent side effect.good luck as soon as u r able come off and don't look back please."
